Give Back a Smile-National Domestic Violence Awareness

At a time when Domestic violence is brought to the forefront of mainstream media with Rhianna and Chris Brown, I am honored to serve in fellowship with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and the Give Back a Smile program. Through the Give Back A Smile program, AACD members like me assist survivors by treating their dental injuries that were sustained from domestic violence, so that they may reclaim their smiles, their self-esteem and, ultimately, their lives.

How the program works:
Domestic violence survivors who have suffered dental injuries from abuse from a former intimate partner or spouse can contact GBAS toll-free at: 800.773.GBAS (4227)
Survivors must make an appointment with a counselor, domestic violence advocate, social worker or therapist to complete the advocate section of the GBAS application.
GBAS conducts the initial review of the application however the dentist has the final say as to the eligibility of the applicant.
If eligible, the AACD connects the survivor with a local GBAS volunteer who provides treatment at no charge to the recipient.

Because more than five million people are affected by domestic violence every year in the United States and Canada, there is clearly a need for a program like Give Back A Smile to help survivors rejuvenate their lives through the caring hands of a local dentist.
In July 2001, the AACD was one of only eight organizations in the world to receive the Award of Excellence and the prestigious Associations Advance America Summit Award for its GBAS program. The American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), of Washington, D.C, sponsors this yearly national competition to recognize the charitable organizations that make the most effort to advance American society.

For complete details about the Give Back A Smile program, visit http://www.givebackasmile.com/ or call toll-free: 800.543.9220. Those interested in finding help with the Give Back A Smile program can also visit the Web site, call the National Hotline: 800.773.GBAS, or send an e-mail to givebackasmile@aacd.com.

A Smile Renews The Spirit

Over the last weekend, I came across a beautiful poem and want to share it with all:
The Smile
by, Cathy Jameson
The smile-the reflection of emotion.
The smile-the mirror to the soul.
The smile-causes a chain reaction.
The smile-music made physical.
The simle-sometimes straight, crooked, sometimes esay sometimes difficult.
The smile-sometimes with laughter, sometimes without.
The smile-an invitation.
The smile-communication at its best.
The smile-the first impression.
The smile-subject of painters, musicians, photographers, dental artists.
The smile-immortalized by literary compositions.
The smile-signature of thespians throughout time.
The smile-missed if absent, welcome if present.
The smile-God's gift to humanity as a way of expressing love.
The smile-agift of love you give to yourself and to each other.
In my office, every smile of every patient is of most importance to me and my staff. Your smile makes our day and brings light into our life. We care about how you feel when you smile. We care and want to help if there are reasons you are not happy with your smile. We care and want every person to have the opportunity to have a healthy life, along with a healthy and confident smile. We look forward to seeing you and your beautiful smile in our office. We care about you and we are here to help in any way.
